Vintage Johann Haviland Bavaria Gold Encrusted Coffee Set, 21 Piece Service for 8, Circa 1920s to 1930s, Rudolf Wächter Decoration. This is a stunning antique German porcelain coffee service by Johann Haviland, Bavaria, decorated with elaborate hand applied raised gold gilding by the Rudolf Wächter studio of Kirchenlamitz, Germany. The set is marked with both the Johann Haviland Bavaria maker’s mark and the separate RW decorator’s mark noting decor pattern 26. Neither mark includes the word Germany, which suggests this set was made for the European market rather than for US export, and likely predates Rosenthal’s 1937 acquisition of the Johann Haviland factory. Based on the marks present, this set most likely dates to the 1920s or 1930s. The set features a rich hunter green ground with dimensional, raised paste gold banding in a floral and scroll motif around the rims, shoulders, and bases of each piece. The gold is applied thickly enough to have real texture, not simply printed on, which sets this apart from most everyday vintage china patterns and points to a higher end decorating studio rather than the factory’s standard in house gilding. Coffee pot with lid 6.5″ tall with lid” Covered sugar bowl with lid (3″ tall) Creamer (2.5″ tall) 8 cups (1.5″ tall) 8 saucers (4.5″ wide). Condition: This set is in near mint condition. There is no noticeable wear, scratching, or fading to the gold gilding on the pieces, which is remarkable for a set of this age. Some pieces do show a light surface film, likely the result of decades in storage rather than any damage. This has not been washed prior to listing so buyers can see the set exactly as found. A gentle hand wash with mild soap and warm water should clear this easily. Please avoid the dishwasher and acidic cleaners near the gold trim. A gorgeous, complete antique service for the collector or anyone wanting a genuinely special piece of early 20th century Bavarian porcelain for display or entertaining.
