Measurement: about 8 7/8″ Cross the top and 4 3/8″ in height. Condition: Perfect except a manufacture defect in the middle of the bowl and paint loss to the rim. I offer on return listing. Thank you for watching and interesting. “Chinese Imari” is a decoration style with predominantly a dry iron red enamel highlighted with gilt applied on underglaze blue and white porcelain. Its immediate source of inspiration is the Japanese aka-e. (red painting) but could be traced back to the Chinese Wanli wucai. This Imari style was very successful in Europe. After the Chinese porcelain trade reopened for large-scale export, they copied the Japanese “red” design to become one distinct export family of it self. Often combined with Batavia. Brown glaze and quite popular with the Dutch merchants. As a general rule the Chinese Imari pieces are more finely potted, have a thinner and more even glaze then the Japanese. The red enamels are as a general rule thinner and more translucent then the Japanese who tends to be of a fuller more dark red. The underglaze blue is generally more bright and clear then the Japanese. Gold’ Imari, decorated in gold, iron-red and a pink-gold wash with flowering plants, each with a pair of birds, namely millet and quail, carnation and crested grouse and double camellia with partridge. Two birds in flight at the top. On the handle flowers, on the cover two groups of flowering plants. This is a beautiful example of’gold’ Imari. No underglaze blue or other enamel colors have been used, and the thin rosy layer of gold provides sufficient contrast to the brighter red and gold. It was once part of an extensive service that has become scattered. The quail, which symbolized courage as a fighting bird, was a popular motif and appears on all kinds of Arita porcelain. Quail and millet indicate autumn. The quail was frequently copied on 18th century European porcelain. Some of the birds and flowers in this intricate decoration are quite stylized and therefore not easy to identify. Knot of lid restuck, large line in lower part of piece. Offered is this elegant set of FOUR fine porcelain china demitasse cups and saucers made in England by Royal Crown Derby. The pattern is Old Imari, no. The date code reads XLIII, which we dont know how to translate. However, we believe this set dates to the last part of the 20. This set depicts the traditional Imari decorating style, with patterns of cobalt and gold on a smooth white blank. Accent colors are Chinese-red with a touch of emerald-green. Gold trim decorates the handles, base and rims of the cups. Thin gold bands outline the white borders that separate the rectangular patterns on the top half of the cups. Gold decorates the rim and verge of the saucers. Gold bands also outline the white borders on the saucers. The saucers measure 4.5 inches in diameter (11.5 cm). The cups stand a bit over 2.25 inches high (5.8 cm) and measure 2 3/8 inches in diameter (6 cm). They will hold 4 ounces of espresso or other strong after-dinner coffee. These pieces are in excellent used condition with no damage that we have observed. Gold trim in excellent condition.
