Vintage SPODE Shanghai R5321 Scalloped and Older Plain Edge Bone China
Vintage SPODE Shanghai R5321 Newer Scalloped and Older Plain Edge Bone China Dinnerware. Pattern Description: Bone China, Multicolored Insects and Flowers, Scalloped or Plain Edges, Gold Trim. This pattern is discontinued. The Newer Scalloped Edge Version was active from 1952 until 1985. The Older Plain (not-scalloped edge) Version was active from 1900 until 1984! Maker’s Marks: Spode used hundreds of different styles of back stamps in its nearly 250 year history. That said, I won’t try to decipher the marks on these pages or estimate dates of production. I will just describe them here and leave you to review with the photos. The pieces show the following marks: 1 Older Marks – The non-scalloped pieces (Demitasse Cups & Saucers and the Coffee & Hot Water Pots) have’SPODE COPELAND’S CHINA – ENGLAND’ printed in black or green. Red handwritten’R 5321′ exists as well, indicating the pattern number. Finally, “SHANGHAI” (inside quotation marks), the pattern name, appears in differing locations depending on the piece. Some of the demitasse cups have an additional printed mark for’Wm H. NEW YORK’, a New York City retailer that imported many different brands of fine china including Spode, Minton, and Wedgwood. 2 Newer Marks: The newer scalloped pieces have a modern printed Red “Spode” with black “FINE BONE CHINA – ENGLAND – R5321-H – SHANGHAI”. Numbers accompany this mark. Condition: Very lightly used overall condition. Plates do not show utensil scratches and the gold trim is unworn. Light shelf wear may exist. Most of the demitasse cups are in plastic wrapping, likely unused or very lightly used, despite their 40+ year age. The pricing from the drop down menu is per item.
