Very nicely made pair of high-end, vintage, Chinese, glazed, porcelain figures. Wonderful, colorful painting- with dragons and bats on the boy’s robes and birds and flowers on the girl’s. Both heavily decorated with raised glazing to simulate elaborate embroidery on their jackets. Nice gold accents on both. Both Stand 10.5 tall. And about 6″ by 5.5″ width/length. No maker’s mark on bottom that I can see. Both are in excellent condition. No Chips, cracks, crazing, scratches, dings, dents, or anything anywhere. The gold portions are all completely intact, and quite reflective, except for a couple minor spots where it seems to have dulled slightly. It may be possible to buff them to a shine again, but I don’t know- I haven’t tried to. Known as Lucky kids or Lucky children, they are posed in greeting and represent the twins Jintong ” (Golden Boy) and “Yunu (Jade Girl) of Chinese legend, whose birth was accompanied by many discoveries of riches and treasures, and who later became immortal servants to Kwan Yin. Long ago, when gods abounded, the Jade emperor, for his own esthetic amusement, covered the earth with ice and snow. Golden Boy brought warmth / light / fire to the earth to help out the humans, but it melted everything, which highly upset the Jade Emperor, who then decided simply to destroy Earth. Jade girl Warned Golden Boy of the danger, and they saved humanity by tricking the Jade emperor, with masses of firecrackers and lanterns, into thinking that the earth had already been destroyed, so he recalled his army. Since then it has been tradition to display their likenesses at entrances, in households, storefronts and for the Chinese New Year, for good fortune, feng shui style- often given as a wedding gift or house warming present. They are normally depicted with a gold coin in their hands, sometimes dangling from a string. It looks like these two probably both had coins, that got lost at some point. Both are truly lively sculptures with lots of character and color that make an attractive accent or focal point to brighten any surroundings. Please read full description and view photos carefully.
