Here we have a monumental, museum-quality dessert service for 16 from Victorian England: Gold Nautilus (# 1277), produced by Wedgwood in the 1880s, is a combination of the transferware and hand-painted processes, resulting in each and every single piece in this set being one of a kind. No two pieces in this matching set are like another. Dozens of different polychrome lustre seashell motif transfers bring cohesion to the set, with those motifs appearing in different combinations on each piece. The primary colors are golds and browns, with the polychrome lustre on the seashells adding a bit of color, as well as smaller elements in the transfers printed primarily in greens and oranges. It is possible that some of the transfer motifs, particularly those of seaweed, have been embellished with hand painting. The gold feathered edges appearing on all of the pieces are obviously hand painted. The sixteen scallop-shell figural plates are ridged along the top, and have a slightly scalloped edge, accented by the gold feathered gilt. They measure approximately 9″ x 9″ and are footed. There are six figural shell serving pieces, all of which are bowl-like, but some of which are shallow enough that the might be considered more like plates. The largest (12.5″ x 6.5″) resembles a mussel shell, with a folded edge and ribbed interior. Two of the same shape (10.75″ x 7″) are flatter and have smooth interiors. The remaining three, all of the same shape (9.5″ x 6.5″) are ribbed in the interior and have “barnacles” protruding in the back. Vintage: circa 1880s; none have the ENGLAND impressed mark added in 1891. Approximate Measurements : noted in description above. Condition : Our photographs reveal the condition best — please enlarge and zoom in on them, and examine them carefully. Some pieces are whiter in color while others are more yellowed. There are no cracks in any of the pieces; nor did we notice any crazing, silver/gray utensil marks, or scratches. There is only one small chip in the group, on one of the serving bowls. It is located on the rim, and a repair appears to have been attempted. It isn’t that noticeable, but it can be seen and felt — see the collage photo highlighting this piece in which the chip is encircled. The front/top of each and every piece in the service is shown in at least one photo — there are two scallop plates to a photo, with all of them appearing in those eight photos. Please enlarge these photos to get the best idea of scattered surface appearance issues affecting various pieces. These could include wear to gold, dark rubs along embossed ribs, a few light yellowish stains, and wear to transfers.
